Karnataka Polytechnic, Mangalore
Karnataka Polytechnic is the second largest Polytechnic in Karnataka. It is situated in the coastal city of Karnataka - Mangalore. The institution is established in the year 1946 during the Madras Regime. But the history of the institution traces back to 1928. This institute was started in a place called Pandeshwara, now the centre place of the city, in 1928 to cater the needs of the Armed Forces. The institution was shifted from Pandeshwar to the current location Kadri Hills during the year 1946, to the newly constructed building and named as Karnataka Polytechnic. The institution then had 4 courses namely Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automobile Engineering and Electrical Engineering. Along with the time the institution also changed and now it is offering eight diploma courses.Being a Government institution, governed by The Department of Technical Education, functioning as per the rules and regulations of the Government of Karnataka, the institution caters the educational needs of the people of all categoty, at low cost.
The institution received World Bank Aid in the year 1991. This has greately enhanced the laboratory facility by procuring state of the art instruments. The Directorate of Technical Education, due to its proactive vision, has supplied state of the art equipment under this support.
During 1994 the institution was recognised as a Project Polytechnic, under the Canada India Institutional Co-operation Project (CIICP). This lead to the induction of systematic and advanced concepts in Management and Education. Continuing Education Cell (CE Cell) is a brain child of this project, which caters the need of community and industry through informal education. The Directorate of Technical Education has given the maximum co-operation and guidance through out in implementing this concept. The project has been renamed as Centre for Continuing Technical Education, Karnataka (CCTEK) in the year 2004. Now it is totally managed by Directorate of Technical Education.
This Institution is declared as Autonomous Institution in the year 1999. The institution has been given Academic Autonomy. With this the institution frames its curriculum, conduction of classes, end examination and announcement of result. The assistance of other polytechnics is utilised in obtaining question papers and valuation.

Located at the highest point of Mangalore, the institution has condusive environment for education. This institution is located at a distance, on road, of 6 km from the starting point of Mangalore - The State Bank. The route number for reaching this place is 19. The Institution is headed by the Principal (grade -2) under the governance of The Director of Technical Education. Individual departments are monitored by the Head of the Department. The office is taken care by the Registrar and Office Superintendents. The hostel is managed by the Warden and it can house about 150 students. The theory classes are engaged regularly by the qualified Lecturers and the practical classes are engaged jointly by the Teaching staff and expert laboratory staff.

Other Activities in the Institution
The Continuing Education Cell (CE Cell) established under CIICP (Now CCTEK) offers Computer Training in various Languages and Packages. Minimum qualification is required for this training and is best suited for those who can not go through the regular scheme or those who are employed. This cell also offers some job oriented courses like Rewinding of motors, Beautician, Wiring, Diesel Mechanic etc.
NCC army wing is also active in the institution.
Bridge Course
For the benefit of students who are aspiring to join B.E. under Diploma quota, a Bridge Course in Mathematics-I and Mathematics-II (according to VTU syllabus) is being arranged during vacation. This course is scheduled for the months June and July of every year. The expert staff of the Department of Science and Mathematics of this institution are the faculty for this package.
Community Polytechnic Scheme
The Ministry of HRD, Government of India, has started the Community Polytechnic Scheme (CPS) to cater the requirement of the Rural Community which can not approach the advanced facilities available in cities. As per this scheme the polytechnic, being the co-ordinator for the scheme, identifies potential rural points and establish training centres there so that the nearby rural community can get job oriented training at their convenience.
Industry Institute Interaction Cell (CCTEK)
The III Cell, headed by the ILO (Industry Liason Officer) is very much active in arranging industry visit, industrial training during vacation and also campus recruitment. The companies visiting our institution for campus interview are Mangalore Refineries and Petrochemicals Limited, HCL, L&T, BIOCON, Advanced Micronic Devices, TVS to name the few. This cell keeps track of the students from their entry into the institution so that it can try for better prospectus of the students.

Alumni Association
Alumni Association started in the year 2001 to keep in touch with the students who have passed from this institution so that the present students get benefited from their knowledge and experience. Yearly activities will be planned in this association. The alumni association also sponsors scholarships to the selected poor students of each branch of the institution.
